Self Improvement Help: Discipline

Are you having a hard time getting or staying disciplined? Are you suffering from a lack of motivation? Movitation and discipline go hand-in-hand. Without motivation it is nearly impossible to become disciplined. Ironically, once you become disciplined you rarely need to be motivated to keep things running smoothly.
Discipline is your willingness and commitment to do what needs to be done. Without it your life would be chaos. Just think about the things that are required of you daily and weekly to keep things running smoothly. Housework, laundry, grocery shopping, gassing up the car, working, bathing, paying the bills, balancing the checkbook. All these things are required activities. Can you imagine not doing these things?
If you are already blessed with a strong sense of discipline then you get these things accomplished without much thought. If, on the other hand, you lack discipline, you may find yourself putting off these necessary tasks until you find yourself with an empty fridge or an overdrawn checking account!
If you need to develop a strong sense of self-discipline you need to get and stay motivated. Here are just a few ways to help you get started:
Focus on the benefits. Spend just a few minutes on each task or chore emphasizing the benefits you’ll receive by finishing. In order to get and stay motivated it is critical to have some sort of payoff in mind. Even if that payoff will come later down the road, remind yourself why completing the task is a good thing.
See the big picture. Keep in mind that the task is only one part of a larger picture. Srubbing the toilet may not inspire you, but having an entire house that’s clean and ready for guests may be more motivating. By looking at the big picture, each little task will hold a little more importance to you.
Do it for the discipline. If you really want to develop strong discipline you’ll need to keep giving your “discipline muscle” a strengthening workout. The way to do this is by pushing yourself to do the things you have to do! As you accomplish each task you can tell yourself that you’re getting more and more disciplined with each passing day. Eventually you’ll find yourself doing what needs to be done without any struggle at all — because you’ll already be disciplined!
